The City of Sydney's draft "City of Sydney Cycle
Strategy and Action Plan", placed on limited public exhibition in
September 2006, basically extended South Sydney Council's well-researched 2004
"South
Sydney Bike Plan" into the City.
Bourke Street, for example, continued to be identified as a
"local network route" which was to be extended to Woolloomooloo.
The final, and very different, version of the "Cycle
Strategy" which was released in April 2007 didn't mention Bourke Street,
but included an announcement - based on market research into non-cyclists'
fears about sharing the road with motor vehicles - that the "City will
develop separated bicycle roads within the existing road kerbs to provide safe
cycling facilities for all cyclists".
Various subsequent Council media releases, most recently the
July 2008 edition of Council's "Sydney City News", proclaim that an initial
$35 million (ie around $400 per domestic ratepayer) has been allocated to the
construction of a 55Km network of these separated cycleways.
Where will these 55km of cycleways - to be built in the
current kerbside parking lanes, despite voluminous international evidence that
this may be extremely dangerous - be installed?
This question, like hundreds of others raised by Surry Hills
and Redfern residents, remains unanswered. However, Figure 27 on page 49 of
Council's "Cycle
Strategy" provides a map showing about 55Km of roads
"to be examined for separated bicycle road suitability".
The map lacks detail and street names, and is difficult to
decypher. However, after much eyestrain, we believe that it includes the
following roads:
